Previously an Earth-like world, became Barsoom less hospitable to life due to his advanced age: as the oceans evaporates, and the atmosphere rarefied, fighting each other to survive. John Carter is prisoner of the inhabitants of Barsoon, but manages to escape. It is then that he meets Tars Tarkas and rescues the Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris, of the belligerence of four green Martian arms, whose respect is earned by its strength and ability to fight.
